The descent of the inhabitants of Folegandros in collective memory

"We don't know were we come from, since the pirates destroyed the island and no one remained. An order was proclaimed by the state, that every one who could not sustain himself should come [in Folegandros] and take houses and fields, in order to populate the island. Some came from Karystos [in Euboea] and were called Karystinoi, the Psaromiligakides and Marinakides came from Selinou in Crete, the Papadopouloi came from Pella [in northern Greece]; other came from Psara, others from other places that we could identify through our grandfathers. We don't know where the race of Folegandros comes from".

Narration of an inhabitant of Folegandros, from the website of the Community of Folegandros (see Webliography)

The first strangers in Folegandros

"In '35-'36 Metaxas [the then dictator of Greece] sent us the exiles. They were the first strangers to be ever seen in Folegandros.
